“Developing and Implementing the Total Health Environment.....a brand-focused design strategy for Kaiser Permanente”
Presenter: Barbara Denton, Director of Kaiser Permanente’s National Facilities Services, Facilities Planning
Kaiser Permanente is committed to helping shape the future of health care and has been recognized as one of America’s leading innovative, high-quality, health care providers and not-for-profit health plans. Founded in 1945, Kaiser's mission is to provide high-quality, affordable health care services and to improve the health of our members and the communities we serve. Kaiser serves approximately 8.9 million members in nine states and the District of Columbia. Care for members and patients has traditionally focused on their "total health," guided by their interactions with their personal physicians, specialists and team of caregivers. The definition of "total health" now includes Kaiser healthcare delivery facilities - the "Total Health Environment."
Barbara Denton, Director, National Facilities Services for Kaiser is leading their "Total Health Environment" initiative. The Total Health Environment approach to healthcare facilities extends the traditional definition of design (form, aesthetics, materials) to include the human experience (emotion and behavior). Paying close attention to the patient-member experience means happier members, as well as a better work experience and environment for Kaiser Permanente employees. Template hospitals also cost about $89 less per square foot to build than non-template hospitals, establish ideal workflows, and are easier for patients and family to navigate. Barbara's presentation will provide insight into how this program was conceived and issues around its implementation.
